Things to do alone

So... because Anna and I are as lame/awesome as people come, we got into a conversation today about how we are the leaders of the Nerdy Virgin Brigade, and then we decided that someday we had to have a conference, and that one of the seminars would be called "Things to Do Alone Late at Night While Other People Are Out Shagging". And of course, Anna and I being who we are, she double-dog-dared me to write a blog entry of a list of things that would fit into said category, and I agreed.

So... here it goes.

Things to Do Alone Late at Night While Other People Are Out Shagging.

Formulate a zombie plan. You should have one anyway, and it consumes a lot of mental energy. Be specific. What kind of weaponry will you have available? Where can you get food? Where are you holing up?

Knitting is an obvious choice, but one that is occasionally overlooked. You get extra points if you knit a shawl, or something in lace. Doing a lace shawl is an excellent choice, obviously.

Watch British TV shows on your laptop. Really, they don't have to be British, I suppose, but if they are it's a bit harder to find them, and it definitely adds to the nerd factor. For extra credit, try some British sci-fi. (Warning: Watching too much Dr. Who before bed can lead to weird dreams involving.... shoot, what's the plural of TARDIS? TARDISes? TARDI? You see what I mean.)

Design your future home. You can do this mentally, or if you're really weird you can do full-out draft plans.

Listen to some mopey music and stare at the wall in a dramatic fashion. I prefer the Smiths and Bright Eyes for this kind of occasion.

Paint your fingernails. I know, it doesn't really fit into the nerd category, but it's time-consuming, and kind of fun, and you can totally still maintain your credibility if you do a weird color.

Watch a musical. Since you're alone, you can sing along without fear of consternation.

... let's just say that single-person '80s dance parties in one's room are entirely underrated.

Podcasts are your friend.

Completely redecorate your house for a) a totally out-of-season holiday or b) a holiday that either no one has ever heard of, or you made up.

Rearrange your furniture!

Bake something.

Organize all your clothing by color.

I'm out of ideas.... I'm sure Anna has more brilliant ones....
